I got a bit bored of Windows 7 and my computer crashed pretty hard, so decided to install the excellent, lightweight linux distro Crunchbang Linux on my Dell Studio XPS 8100. All was going well until I realised that my Netgear WNDA3100v2 USB adapter doesn't work too good with linux. This is essential for my set-up should I want Internet access.

For some reason, I figured it might be easier to set up the USB adapter using Ubuntu - so installed that as an alternative to Crunchbang. Still doesn't work.
On a positive note, I managed to get Steam working on Ubuntu, but Football Manager 2011 won't work on Wine either.

Game over. Back to Windows 7, I guess. Now where did I put those installation discs? Oops.

I have a feeling this is going to confuse so many people... for a while. And then they'll get used to it.

It's one of those design decisions that big companies don't usually want to make for fear of alienating so many technically uneducated users and I'm sure Facebook will hear many cries of "But how do I comment?!" and "How do I start a new paragraph?"

Or maybe I'm over-estimating the average Facebook user's ability to write more than a few works in txt tlk. LOL. j/k. :P

It's not often that I don't save a file whilst working on it, but today I didn't save the file when working on it. It's always at that time, just as you're happy with what you've done so far that Photoshop crashes. For no apparent reason.

Bastard.

Sat, 19 Feb 2011 11:52:54 -0800 #! Linux and my PC http://post.coxy.me.uk/-linux-and-my-pc http://post.coxy.me.uk/-linux-and-my-pc
If you're not into geeky stuff, you may-as-well leave now.

Sat here in my room, I have a Dell Studio XPS 8100 machine. The specs look good; it has a Intel i7 processor, enough RAM to keep me happy and a RAID set up totaling 2 TB of disk space. I'm running Windows 7 and whilst it seemed okay when the machine was brand new, it seems really slow and cumbersome these days. So much so that I decided that it might be a good idea to install CrunchBang Linux (#!) as my default OS and only boot into Windows when I want to do work in Photoshop, play Football Manager or other such tasks.

I just downloaded #!, put it on a USB stick and booted into the Live version. It was so fast - completely loaded before I could even think about it. I must install this.

Unfortunately for me, I know NOTHING about having your hard drives set up as a RAID. All I know is that I have two 1TB HDD in my computer and that one is backing the other up (that's how they work, right?). Since all my photos, music and 'work' is solely on these hard drives and I have no externals to 'back up' to, I'm pretty uncertain about partitioning the hard drives to accommodate for a #! installation just in case I manage to destroy everything.

I guess I'm going to play it safe and have to wait a while - at least until I can get out to the shop and buy a big external HDD to store all my irreplaceable data. In the meantime, if anyone has any advice or useful links about how I can give my Windows 7 installation a 'spring clean' or any information about RAID drives on #! / Debian, that would be great.

Wed, 16 Feb 2011 10:46:37 -0800 Not so ClearType http://post.coxy.me.uk/not-so-cleartype http://post.coxy.me.uk/not-so-cleartype
I'm using some custom fonts on thetourjacket.com from the Google Font Directory and sitting and looking at it on an Apple Mac, the fonts look great. Only, when I get home and check it on my Microsoft Windows based machine, it looks terrible.

I'm sure it's not the first time I've done a search for anti-aliasing on Windows, but this time discovered an interesting article about ClearType - the technology that Microsoft puts in it's operating system to render smooth fonts.

I've just sat here flicking the ClearType technology on and off. When it's off, it looks terrible. When it's on, it looks marginally better - but you do have to run through a four-step process where Windows asks you which words render better from a selection of around eight.

I don't understand why Microsoft can't just make fonts look as good as they look on Macs. Apple's not had problem with fonts for ten years or more - why can't Windows do the same?
